Open Badges 3.0

Also known as: OB 3.0, Open Badge 3.0

The 1EdTech specification for digital badges and micro-credentials, aligned with W3C Verifiable Credentials as of version 3.

Open Badges is the 1EdTech specification for digital badges and credentials. Version 3.0 is the first release that is natively a W3C Verifiable Credentials profile — previous versions (1.x and 2.x) used a different IRI-based data model and are not directly interoperable with W3C VC tooling.

OB 3.0 defines the semantic shape of a credential: the AchievementSubject containing an achievement with id, type, name, description, criteria, and alignment (skill-framework mappings). It defines Result, Evidence, and ResultDescription objects for scored outcomes. The cryptographic proof layer is deliberately left open — any W3C VC proof format is acceptable.

LearnCoin is Open Badges 3.0 native from day one. Every credential we issue declares OpenBadgeCredential in its type array and populates the OB 3.0 AchievementSubject fields. Structural conformance is live today; formal 1EdTech Conformance Test Suite certification is on the roadmap.

This is a deliberate positioning move: Credly is still Open Badges 2.0 in production, Accredible is partway through a migration, and no living competitor ships OB 3.0 natively. That window closes when Credly completes its migration.
