EIP-4844

Also known as: proto-danksharding, blob transactions

The Ethereum upgrade that introduced 'blob' data — cheaper, ephemeral data availability that L2s use to post batches back to L1.

EIP-4844, shipped in the Cancun-Deneb hard fork (March 2024), introduced "blob" transactions to Ethereum. Blobs are large chunks of data (~125 kB each) that rollups post alongside regular transactions. Blobs have their own gas market (much cheaper than calldata) and expire after ~18 days — they're for data availability, not persistent storage.

This matters for LearnCoin economically. Base and other OP-Stack chains use blob space (post-4844) to post their rollup batches back to Ethereum. Blob-posting costs dropped L2 transaction fees significantly — a 10-20x reduction in typical Base gas prices. LearnCoin's anchoring economics benefit directly.

"Proto-danksharding" is another name for EIP-4844 — the "proto" indicates it's the first step toward full Danksharding, which will scale blob availability much further. For credential anchoring workloads, current EIP-4844 capacity is already effectively unlimited; we'd anchor for free under normal Base conditions.
